ACME BREWING - LOS ANGELES - 1935 - 1954

 

Acme Brewing Company was a branch of Olympia Brewing of WA. Heidelberg Inn was located at 35 Ellis Street, San Francsico, it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1906, but was rebuilt, it closed in 1914. Before the brewery was built in1906, beer was being shipped to CA from WA. This brewery did not brew Olympia Beers, but brewed "Acme Beer", "Acme Lager", "Acme Bock", "Old Bohemian" & "Franciscaner".

 

In 1916 WA & OR voted for Statewide Prohibition, production was moved to CA. National Prohibition happened 4 years later. In 1916 Acme joined the "CA Brewing Association" with National Brewing Co, Broadway Brewing Co, Claus Wreden Brewing Co, Union Brewing & Malting, & Henry Weinhard Agency of Portland OR. In 1920, with Prohibition only Acme and National continued to operate, the others were forced out of business.

 

During Prohibition, National refined ceral and produced a low alcohol beer, "Bohemian Brew" Acme produced a low alochol beer of 0.5 - 1.0% alcohol called "Acme Brew" or "Light Acme".

 

1933 Prohibition Repealed.

1933-36 Acme Breweries operated as Cereal products Refining Co.

1936-43 Acme Breweries know as CA Brewers Association

1935 - 54 Acme also had a facility in LA.

1954 both LA & SF plants sold to Liebman Breweries, NY.
